Detection issues

- Can you detect our test video? In VSO Downloader, go to Help menu > Online help > Detect my first video now. If you can't detect it, it may be due to a network problem, please contact the support.

- You may have launched VSO Downloader after the video/audio has begun. You must start the program before playing the media so that it detects streaming from its beginning.

- The media has been stored in your browser's cache. Media which have been completely loaded are saved in the cache to enhance data loading. Note that this is related to the browser itself, not the Downloader.
Here are tutorials to delete the cache. Click on the one related to your browser: Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer.

- The media is encrypted through HTTPS. In this case, VSO Downloader does detect an HTTPS content but can't download it. It will be downloadable in a future update. Meanwhile, you may bypass the problem by using a screen recorder
Open the software,click on Detection/ Download URL Copy and Paste youtube video's URL and click on Donwnload. The download starts immediately!

Understanding download errors

Right click on the file downloaded in VSO Downloader and select "View file log". Errors should be in red. Here is a non exhaustive list of errors:

- HTTP error: 403 -> Forbidden
The file host has restricted the access to the file. Download limitation or anti-leech measures may cause this problem. You may bypass the issue by putting the host in the list of secure streams. Right click your item in the interface and select 'add in list' > 'secure stream'.

- HTTP error: 503 -> Limit Exceeded
The server may limit the access of the file to one hit. When you click to download a file, it counts a hit. For instance, Mega limits the number of hits on each file, so if you try to restart the download, this error is likely to show up.

- Socket Timeout
When a file stops downloading for a while, it is likely to be a socket timeout. (speed will fall to 0). It means the server has stopped transferring data. It could be either on purpose or a momentary problem coming from the host.

- Part size not complete
The downloader couldn't get the whole file. Try restarting the download: in VSO Downloader, right-click on the file and select "restart".
It means VSO Downloader can't handle the download of the media file. It is possible it will be supported in a future version but we do not know how soon. You can use a screen recorder as a temporary solution, see here for a here for a short list.

Miscellaneous

It may be a file hoster restriction. Some servers won't allow simultaneous downloads. You must wait for the current file to finish downloading.
Most streaming video formats like FLV or MP4 can start at any position of the file and are considered as a new video each time you seek it.
When you refresh a page you can have 2 cases:

1 - The video restarts at the previous position so it is considering as a new video and will be downloaded again

2 - The video restarts from the beginning, in this case it should not be downloaded
VSO Downloader downloads what you are watching, i.e: it can't know the beginning of the video if you start to read it from the middle.
This happens when a file already exists with the same name in the output folder.
Some sites will display the same file name when downloading (for instance, on youtube, name is: videoplayback.flv), so you may rename them to avoid confusions.
You may have noticed that recently some downloads, particularly with Youtube videos, record with the "live recording" method.
The progression bar is a different color green as it downloads. This is a fairly new downloading method in our software.
Here is why it happens and how to deal with it:

Youtube is changing videos protocol and the only way for our program to detect the videos is to download them using the live recording method.
This means that you have to let the video run until the end, you can't just close the video as soon as it was detected like before. Also, the live recording being live, the download will start automatically. You'll have to manually delete it if you didn't want this particular video (it may happen with some advertisements on youtube too). For now this is the only way we can download some of the new YouTube content.

We recommend using our own and free VSO Media Player. Download it here.
